Google defines hype as ‘Extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion’. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Richmond circa 2013.
For a team that, well, hasn’t really achieved anything for three decades – Richmond has an extraordinary ability to get people excited and dispel reality. If we were a real money making company we’d be Fairfax, once powerful, now a bit of a joke, but still hanging around due to a loyal following.
The way journalists and the general AFL online throng are carrying on, you’d swear that Damien Hardwick rocked up to the season launch, flipped everyone the bird and muttered ‘we’ve got this’. And that every Richmond fan is crowing about some imminent dynasty. Let me tell you right now, this Richmond fan ain’t and he encourages other Richmond fans to show similar restraint.
I expect us to be in the mix and, yes, I think that, given a decent injury run, we should play finals, but I’m sure not deleting my Expedia September Specials bookmark.
We’ve improved our depth by adding blokes that Melbourne, North and Essendon didn’t want (dwell on that) but I’m reasonably sure we are three early season key injuries off topping up with another top three draft pick.
Call me a pessimist, but I won’t be getting excited until that win tally ticks over 12. Fifty times bitten, twice shy.
Which brings us to this, if anybody is still reading – the return of your favourite (only?) Richmond blog.
The Jurica Medal returns this year and due to author relocation, is proudly sponsored by Foxtel.
It’s also back with added features.
Basically, I got sad not being able to give Trent Cotchin votes last year. So, because it’s my thing and I can do what I want, he’s in contention this year.
The same set of 1-5 votes is up each week but count towards a suite of different awards.
It’s important now to point out that many of my ideas are
borrowed stolen from the brilliant set up over at Demonblog. It’s a great resource for all fans and I encourage you to keep an eye on it throughout the year. He’s also a great follow on Twitter if that’s your poison.
Firstly, the Anthony Banik best first year player award is up for grabs for anyone yet to play an AFL game. That’s: Messrs Arnot, Darrou, McBean, McDonough, McIntosh, Verrier, Vlastuin and Williams.
Secondly, the Blair Hartley Appreciation Award is on offer for any of our growing foreign legion: Chaplin, A Edwards, Grigg, Houli, Knights, Lonergan, Maric, Petterd and Stephenson.
Thirdly, the Jurica Medal is back and all bar Cotchin, Deledio, Martin and Riewoldt are eligible.
Lastly, the Yet To Be Named Medal is open for all. I’m also accepting nominations for a name.
More to come shortly, including:
- More pessimism
- A name
- Plenty more rambling
- Probably more rants about the media
- Definitely more links to the Arrested Development Snoopy sad walk clip.
